Faceted Glass Table Lamp, Sculptural Wave-Form Base with Opal Glass Shade, 1970s/80s

Sculptural glass lamp bases that abandon the turned column altogether in favor of a single organic, wave-like form represent one of the more ambitious directions in mid-to-late 20th century lighting — the glass itself becomes a piece of standalone sculpture, with the light fitting almost incidental to the form beneath it.

This lamp is built around a solid, faceted glass base carved into a sweeping, organic wave form, paired with a cylindrical white opal glass shade above it. It is attributed to the French crystal house Cristallerie Saint-Louis, with the seller reporting a sandblasted signature beneath the base, though no clear photograph of that mark has been supplied to confirm it. A solid glass base carved into a curved, faceted form like this catches and refracts light very differently from a smooth blown surface — each flat facet acts as its own small mirror and prism, which is part of why sculptural glass bases of this kind are so often photographed lit rather than in daylight.

There is a small millimeter-scale chip beneath the base, invisible once the lamp is set on a surface, and a few small internal inclusions in the opal glass shade that are original to the glass and don't affect the piece once lit. The lamp has clearly been well kept, and now moves forward to a new setting. Suited to a console table, a bedside table, or anywhere its sculptural base can be appreciated at eye level.

Fitted with an E14 socket and supplied with a bulb, the base alone weighs 2 kg, giving a real sense of its solidity in hand.
