French Candlestick Table Lamp, Foliate Stem on Scrolled Tripod Base, Patinated Metal — Early 20th Century
Nineteenth-century France perfected a candlestick vocabulary so rich that the twentieth century spent decades quoting it. Lamps like this one belong to that quotation: cast in the neoclassical revival taste around the turn of the century, when electric light was new and makers dressed it in the most trusted forms they knew — the leafy baluster, the ringed column, the tripod base on scrolled feet that had stood on French mantels for a hundred years.
This lamp is French, early twentieth century, in patinated metal: a concave-sided triangular plinth raised on scrolled feet, carrying a crown of cast palmettes and shells, from which a leaf-wrapped baluster stem rises through a beaded ring to a slender column, finishing in a collar of curling acanthus and a fluted, petal-rimmed cup beneath the socket. Turn it slowly and count the separate castings stacked on the rod — plinth, crown, baluster, rings, collar, cup — each cast and finished on its own before assembly, the layered construction that gives these revival lamps their depth of profile against a plain modern reproduction's single pour. The surface carries a naturally developed patina. The lamp is fully rewired through our workshop before dispatch, fitted with the appropriate plug or adapter for your country, and delivered working and ready to use.
The metal is in good condition with light wear and surface marks consistent with its century of use, shown exactly as they are in the photographs. Whoever lit their evenings by this stem before you let its patina build undisturbed. It suits a bedside table, a desk, or a library shelf.
The lamp is patinated cast metal, over a century of surface in its favour, rewired before dispatch. It arrives professionally packed and fully insured — we handle the paperwork and worldwide shipping, with all import duties paid by us, so there is nothing to settle on delivery. Returns are accepted within 30 days.
