The three-arm wall sconce was one of the most practical solutions European lighting design ever settled on for filling a wall with light: enough arms to cast a real glow across a dining room or hallway, arranged around a single decorative backplate that carried the whole visual weight of the piece. A quiver or sheaf motif at the top of the backplate was a favorite device of neoclassical design, borrowed from classical military imagery and repeated across candlesticks, sconces, and clock cases throughout the nineteenth century and its later revivals.

This sconce is worked in gilt metal, its backplate rising to a stylized sheaf or quiver form at the top, tapering down through a scrolled, foliate mid-section to a pointed finial at the base. Three scrolled arms extend from the backplate at even intervals, each terminating in a shaped drip pan and candle socket. Note how the backplate's silhouette narrows to a point at both top and bottom rather than terminating in a flat edge, a detail that gives the piece a slender, upright profile even with three arms extending outward, distinct from the broader, rounder backplates common to other period sconce designs.
