Gilt Metal Corinthian Column Table Lamp, Fluted Shaft, Empire Style Figural Base

The Corinthian column has supplied lamp designers with a ready-made classical vocabulary since the earliest days of electric lighting, drawing directly on the architectural orders that European taste returned to again and again through the nineteenth century. A fluted shaft topped with an acanthus-leaf capital reads instantly as antique, and set on a weighted figural base, the form gave a small tabletop object the presence of something architectural rather than merely decorative.

This lamp is worked in gilt metal, its shaft fluted along its full length and rising to a capital modeled with acanthus leaf detail, continuing down through a further band of dense foliate chasing before meeting a figural base worked with reclining animal forms at each corner, set on a shaped, stepped plinth. Note how the ornament changes register three times along the column's height — architectural fluting above, dense naturalistic foliage at the mid-section, and sculptural figures at the base — a layered approach to decoration typical of the historicist revival styles popular through the second half of the nineteenth century. The piece has been fully restored by a specialist polisher and finished with a protective microcrystalline wax to guard against future oxidation.

The piece reaches us in good condition, having been professionally restored, with the wear typical of an object of this type largely addressed through that restoration work. As this is a lamp, it will still pass through our own workshop for a full rewire and safety check before dispatch, delivered working and ready to use in your country regardless of any prior electrical work. Placed on a console or side table, its height and architectural detail make it a genuine focal point rather than a background light.
