The fluted baluster is one of lighting design's most durable forms, borrowed directly from classical column and candlestick tradition and still in steady production well into the twentieth century. Its appeal was practical as much as decorative: a tapering, reeded shaft reads as substantial from any angle, catches light along its length, and sits comfortably under a shade of almost any shape, which is why the form persisted through so many decades of otherwise changing taste.

This example is worked in gilt metal, its column formed as two fluted baluster sections in graduating widths, divided by a narrow turned collar at the center and rising from a broad, gently domed circular foot. Note how the fluting runs the full length of both sections without interruption at the collar join, a small but telling sign of careful turning rather than a piece assembled from mismatched stock parts. The base is fitted with a socket at the top and a push-button switch set into the foot itself, a control style commonly seen on lamps of this general vintage.

The piece reaches us in good working order, with light surface marks to the metal consistent with genuine age and handling, and no damage affecting its structure or function. As this is a lamp base only, it is sold without a shade — leaving you free to choose one that suits your room.
