Head low and mane in thick curls, this lion pads across its black plinth with quiet authority. Small enough for a desk, it has the gravity of a much larger sculpture. It is a classic companion for a study or library.
The figure shows a walking lion in gold-toned patinated metal, with a heavy curling mane, a lean body and a long tail swinging behind, one forepaw stepping forward. It stands on a rectangular black base with a fine speckle. Small metal animals on stone bases were popular Grand Tour souvenirs: reduced copies of famous classical sculptures that travellers brought home as paperweights and desk ornaments.
The figure is in very good vintage condition, with light wear to the underside and light marks to the base. It is offered with the patina and light marks of years on a desk. On a writing desk, a bookshelf or a mantel, it works as a paperweight or a small classical accent among books and objects.
