Lidded Bonbonnière in Silver-Tone Metal, Embossed Mask and Scroll Band, Figural Handles, Leaf Finial, Renaissance Revival Style

A face peers out from a band of curling leaves, flanked by two small figures that serve as handles. It is a lot of character for a box that fits in two hands. It is a piece that turns a coffee table or a dressing table into a small display.

The box is round, made of silver-tone metal, with a stepped foot and a domed lid topped by a darker, leaf-shaped finial. Around the middle runs a textured band embossed with scrolling foliage, centred on a mask-like face. Two slender figural handles curve out from either side. A face set among scrolling leaves is called a grotesque, an ornament the Renaissance revived from the painted walls of ancient Roman houses.

The box is in very good vintage condition, with light oxidation inside. It is sold as found, and the oxidation inside has not been polished away. On a coffee table, it holds wrapped sweets for guests. On a dressing table or desk, it keeps jewelry, keepsakes or small odds and ends.
