Louis XVI Style Wall Sconces Pair, Gilt Metal Quiver Sconces with Two Arms — French, 20th Century

The quiver of arrows is Louis XVI ornament at its most literary — a nod to Cupid hung on the wall, the emblem the style used wherever it wanted romance dressed as antiquity. Sconce makers gave the motif its perfect home: the backplate becomes the quiver itself, tapering like a fluted arrow-case with the fletched shafts showing at the top, and the candle arms spring from it as if slung at its sides.

This pair is French, twentieth-century work, in gilt metal: each sconce a quiver-form backplate, the case fluted and tapering to a leafy tip with an acorn drop, the arrows' feathered ends cast in a bundle at the crown, carrying two scrolled arms with leaf joins that sweep out to beaded, dished drip pans and ringed candle sockets under wax-drip sleeves. Look at the quiver's crown — each arrow's fletching is cut separately in the cast, a bundle you can count, which is where careful work in this pattern shows itself against the flattened crowns of cheap copies. The pair is in very good condition with light wear; the candle sleeves are mismatched — one white pair, one cream pair — stated plainly, and replaced with a matching set through our workshop before dispatch. The pair is fully rewired and arrives prepared for wall installation, in working order.

The gilt surfaces carry only light wear across both, as the photographs show. Whoever hung this pair before you kept both quivers full. They are ready for a dining room, a hallway, or either side of a bedroom mirror.
