Mid-Century French Style Brass Scroll Wall Sconce — Two-Arm Curled Wall Light

By the middle of the twentieth century, French wall lighting had traded candle-form symmetry for something looser — a single sinuous line of metal, coiled rather than carved, doing the work that acanthus and scrollwork once did by hand. This sconce belongs to that later idiom, closer to a line drawing in metal than to the dense ornament of the century before.

This is a two-arm wall sconce with a pair of open, curled brass scrolls springing from a small oval backplate, each terminating in a socket cup — the coiling itself is the ornament here, a technique sometimes called wirework scroll, where a single rod is bent into its final shape rather than cast. A slender blackened metal stem threads up through the centre of the two brass curls, giving the piece a two-tone contrast between polished scroll and darker armature. We describe the metal conservatively as gilt metal on a patinated metal backplate, since no maker's mark or alloy stamp is visible in the photograph supplied.

It reaches us as a single sconce rather than a pair, with both scroll arms intact and the backplate sound. We pass it on ready for its next room rather than restored beyond what was needed.
