Mirrored Wall Sconces Pair, Black and Brass Sconces with Striped Frosted Glass Flames — French, 1950s–60s

The great Parisian lighting houses of the 1950s — Maison Charles, Arlus, Lunel — shared a language even when they signed nothing: black lacquer against polished brass, a cast ornament placed like a brooch, and above it all a flame of glass. Sconces in this taste treated the wall fitting as tailoring — a dark cylinder dressed with one gilt detail — and let the tall frosted shade do the illumination.

This pair is French, from the 1950s–60s, in the taste of those Paris houses, and properly mirrored — a left and a right: each sconce a black-lacquered cylindrical body mounted off a brass wall bracket, dressed at the front with a cast gilt leaf ornament, from which a slender brass arm curves out and up to a pierced gallery ring carrying a tall, slender flame of frosted glass, blown with soft vertical white stripes and waisted like a bottle. Hold a shade to the light — the stripes are in the glass, opaque ribbons alternating with translucent ones, so the lit shade reads as a column of soft vertical flames rather than a plain glow, the effect the whole design is built around. Both glasses are intact. The pair is tested and working, fully checked and rewired as needed through our workshop before dispatch, and arrives prepared for wall installation, in working order.

The black lacquer and brass carry good honest use, with light wear consistent with their decades, as the photographs show. Whoever hung this mirrored pair before you kept both slender glasses unbroken — no small thing at twenty-four centimetres of thin frosted glass apiece.
