Monteith Style Bowl in Silver-Tone Metal with Gilt-Tone Interior, Lion Mask Ring Handles, Scalloped Rim, Blank Cartouche

Lion masks hold rings at either side, and a scalloped rim curls around the top like a crown. Look inside and the bowl glows gold. It is a small piece with a great deal of ceremony.

The bowl is round, made of silver-tone metal on a gadrooned pedestal foot. The lower body is fluted, and at the front sits a scrolled cartouche with a diamond-textured border around a plain, unengraved shield. Around the top runs a scalloped, notched rim with scroll ornament. A lion mask holding a drop ring is set at each side, and the interior is finished in a warm gilt tone. The notched rim comes from the monteith, a larger bowl once filled with iced water, where wine glasses hung by their feet from the notches to chill.

The bowl is in very good vintage condition. Its blank cartouche is ready for its next owner's monogram, if they want one. On a dining table or sideboard it holds sugar cubes, sweets or potpourri, and on a dressing table it keeps rings and small keepsakes.
