Safi, on Morocco's Atlantic coast, has been a center of glazed pottery production for centuries, and its workshops are known in particular for a distinctive black-and-white palette built up in bands of geometric pattern — chevrons, triangles, and stacked lattice work painted freehand and fixed under a glossy glaze. Lamp bases were a natural extension of this tradition into the twentieth century, taking the same tiered, bulbous profile long used for jugs and covered bowls and adapting it to hold a socket at the top instead of a lid.

This base is thrown and glazed in the Safi manner, built as a tiered ceramic form: a slim upper cylinder banded in triangular motifs, a wide flat disc collar, and a broader domed lower body carrying a fuller geometric pattern in black on white, finished at the foot with a narrow striped border. Note how the pattern shifts in density and scale between the three tiers rather than repeating a single motif top to bottom — a hand-painted, tier-by-tier approach typical of Safi ware, distinct from the more uniform transfer patterns found on factory-made ceramics.
