Murano Glass Table Lamp, Pulegoso Glass Shade with Millefiori on Chrome Stem — Italian, 1970s

By the 1970s, Murano had learned to play against itself: the island's oldest tricks mounted on the newest hardware. A shade blown by hand in the lagoon's furnaces — bubbled, murrine-flecked, its rim left exactly as the shears released it — set on a stem and dome of mirror chrome, the Space Age's own material. The collision is the design: fifteenth-century technique, seventeenth-floor apartment.

This lamp is Italian, from the 1970s: a squared cup of hand-blown Murano glass with softly waved, free-formed rim, worked in white pulegoso — the glass dense with tiny incorporated air bubbles that give it its frost — and scattered with polychrome millefiori inclusions in yellow, blue, red, and orange, each a small cane flower caught in the wall; the cup sits on a slender chromed stem rising from a domed, mirror-polished circular foot. Light it and watch the murrine — unlit they read as flecks, but the bulb behind the pulegoso turns each one into a glowing point of colour floating in white mist, the double life the maker built into the glass. Look also at the rim's irregularity: the hand's work, not a fault. The glass is intact without chips or cracks, the chrome excellent. The lamp is fully rewired through our workshop before dispatch, fitted with the appropriate plug or adapter for your country, and delivered working and ready to use.
