Napoleon III Style Double Inkstand, Patinated Metal with Relief Scrolls, Two Lidded Wells with Bud Finials, Paw Feet
Two lidded wells stand side by side on a small tray, like a pair of domed pavilions on a terrace. The whole piece is covered in relief scrolls and leaves, softened by a warm, dark patina. It gives a writing desk a sense of order and occasion.
The inkstand is a rectangular tray of patinated metal, raised at each end and decorated all over with scrolling foliage in relief. It stands on four curved legs ending in paw feet. At the centre sit two cylindrical ink wells banded with dot decoration, each closed by a hinged domed lid with leaf decoration and a bud-shaped finial. Two wells were usual on a working desk, one for black ink and one for red, which clerks and letter writers used for accounts and corrections.
The inkstand is in very good vintage condition, with natural patina, and both lids open and close cleanly. Its patina is left just as it has developed. On a writing desk, it holds ink for a dip pen, or stands as a decorative centrepiece beside a blotter.
