Pair of Antique Art Nouveau Enamelled Glass Vases, Floral Basket and Gilt Arabesques — Europe, circa 1900

The enamelled satin glass vase belongs to one of Art Nouveau's most characteristic decorative achievements — glass treated not as a transparent vessel but as a painted canvas, its frosted surface providing the perfect ground for raised enamel flowers and gilt arabesques applied by hand. European workshops in France and Bohemia produced these pieces in considerable numbers between 1890 and 1910, and the best examples, like this pair, combine genuine painterly skill with the period's love of flowing, asymmetric ornament.

This pair is European, circa 1900, in satin frosted glass with enamelled and gilt decoration. Each vase rises in a tall, elegant flared trumpet form from a base that shades from clear frost into a soft green gradient, the colour deepening toward the foot. Across the body, a basket of flowers is rendered in raised enamel relief — individual blooms in white and soft pink, each petal built up with genuine dimension rather than painted flat, arranged within a gilt basket form worked in fine gold detail. Above and below the floral panel, gilt geometric arabesques and a delicate beaded swag border frame the composition, the hard gold lines providing structure against the softer, more organic enamel flowers. Note how the two vases are closely matched in their painted decoration despite being entirely hand-applied — the floral baskets, the gilt patterning, and the colour gradient all consistent across the pair, the mark of a workshop producing to a considered and repeated design.
