Pair of Antique Bronze Candlestick Table Lamps, Louis XVI Fluted Column — France, 19th Century

The candlestick lamp is one of the more satisfying conversions the electric age made from the candlelit one. A well-cast nineteenth-century candlestick already had everything a lamp base needed — height, weight, a considered silhouette — and rather than discard these pieces when electricity arrived, the best examples were fitted with a socket at the crown and kept exactly as they were below, the original casting doing all the work it had always done.

This pair is French, nineteenth century, in bronze, each lamp built as a Louis XVI fluted column. The base descends through two registers of ornament — a beaded and gadrooned lower plinth chased with a figural frieze, and above it a fluted drum with a bead border — before the column proper rises through vertical reeding to a leaf-cast capital. From the capital, the original candle socket remains in place, its beaded drip-pan intact, now carrying the modern fitting above. Note how the ornament changes register from the figural base to the plain fluted shaft to the leaf capital — three distinct decorative zones stacked with the confidence of a foundry working from a fully developed model, rather than a single motif repeated top to bottom. Both lamps are closely matched in scale and casting detail.
