Pair of Antique Bronze Candlesticks, Louis XVI Empire Style Fluted Column — France, 19th Century

The fluted column candlestick was one of the most disciplined forms the classical revival produced. Where the rococo candlestick had curved and scrolled, the column candlestick stood straight — a shaft drawn directly from architecture, its vertical reeding a quotation of the temple column, its stepped square base a quotation of the plinth beneath. The style bridges Louis XVI and Empire precisely because both periods drew from the same source: the confidence that classical proportion, correctly applied, needed no further ornament to justify itself.

This pair is French, nineteenth century, cast in bronze, each candlestick built as a fluted column rising from a stepped square base to a socket cup with a slightly flared rim. The base descends in two clean tiers — a lower square plinth and an upper rounded moulding — before the column proper begins its vertical rise, the fluting running the full length of the shaft without interruption. At the top, the socket sits on a small collar, its rim gently everted to catch drips, the practical detail that every well-designed candlestick provided for. The bronze carries an attractive antique patina across both pieces, the warm, even darkening that comes from more than a century of handling and honest use.
