Pair of Antique French Brass Single-Arm Wall Sconces, Oval Backplate — France, Early 20th Century

The single-arm wall sconce was the French interior's most economical lighting solution — one light, cleanly mounted, sized for a hallway, a stairwell, or the narrow wall beside a doorway where a two-arm fitting would crowd the space. Cast in brass and finished with a shaped oval backplate, these sconces relied on proportion and a few well-placed decorative touches rather than abundance of ornament to earn their place on the wall.

This pair is French, early twentieth century, in brass, each sconce built around an oval backplate from which a single scrolled arm extends outward, terminating in a candle-form socket and a scalloped drip pan. The two backplates differ slightly in their decorative treatment — one plain oval with a pierced foliate cresting at the base, the other framed with a more elaborate beaded and foliate border — note how this variation, rather than diminishing the pair, is itself a mark of genuine period pieces assembled together rather than a single mould-matched modern set. Both arms share the same confident scrolled profile and shell-form terminal at the socket base. The brass carries a warm, consistent tone across both pieces.
