Pair of Antique French Gilt Bronze Three-Arm Wall Sconces, Louis XVI Style — France, 19th Century

The three-arm Louis XVI wall sconce was the period's most considered solution to the problem of wall lighting at scale. Developed in the 1770s and 1780s, when the neoclassical interior was reaching its greatest refinement, the form combined the architectural authority of the quiver or column backplate with the practical generosity of three lights — enough to fill a dining room or a salon without the weight of a chandelier. The great Parisian foundries cast these pieces in gilt bronze with a precision that matched the finest furniture of the period, and they remained in production throughout the nineteenth century because rooms of a certain ambition kept demanding them.

This pair is French, nineteenth century, cast in gilt bronze in the Louis XVI manner, each sconce built around a tapering backplate enriched with chased acanthus and gadrooned ornament, terminating at the base in a pendant drop. Three arms branch from the body: two sweeping outward to the sides and one rising at centre, each arm chased along its length and terminating in a foliate socket cup with a dentilled bobèche. The central socket rises above the arm junction on a turned column enriched with acanthus leaves — the vertical emphasis that gives the Louis XVI three-arm its characteristic silhouette, taller than it is wide, commanding on the wall. Note how the chasing on the backplate changes character from the geometric gadrooning at the lower section to the freer acanthus work above — the combination of two ornamental registers in a single piece, the vocabulary of a foundry working from period models rather than simplified patterns. The gilt bronze carries a warm, slightly varied tone across both sconces consistent with a century and a half of indoor life.

These were kept somewhere careful. The gilt is sound and present across both sconces; one candle sleeve is missing from a socket and will need replacing before use — noted and priced accordingly. Both sconces will benefit from a light clean before hanging, as photographed.
