Pair of Art Deco Marble Pedestal Stands, Rose and Green Marble — Europe, Vintage

The Art Deco fascination with marble produced some of the period's most purely geometric small objects — pieces that took the material's natural veining and set it against hard, architectural forms: the flat plane, the square column, the stepped base. Where earlier decorative traditions used marble as a backdrop for ornament cast in metal, the Deco designers let the stone itself carry the entire composition, pairing contrasting colours and patterns to do the work that carving would have done in an earlier century.

This pair is European, vintage, each piece built from two contrasting marbles: a rose-toned marble top with dramatic white and burgundy veining, mounted on a slender rose marble column that rises from a square base in a cooler green marble with fine crazed veining. A small brass fitting is set into the centre of each flat top — most likely a pin intended to hold a candle, though its exact original purpose is not confirmed. The geometric confidence of the piece — flat plane, single column, square base, no ornament beyond the stone itself — places it firmly within the Art Deco vocabulary, where the contrast between two colours of marble did all the decorative work that acanthus or scrollwork would have done in an earlier period.

Both pieces show light general wear consistent with age, and one has a small chip at the foot, as noted and photographed. They are ready for a console, a mantelpiece, or a desk, and would suit a pair of candles or simply stand as a considered pair of objects in their own right.
