Pair of Baroque Revival Candlesticks, Silver-Tone Metal, Triangular Scroll-Foot Bases with Acanthus Relief, Textured Stems

Scrolls curl out from the three corners of each base, as if the candlesticks were about to step off the table. Above them, slim textured stems rise to wide candle cups that catch the light. They are a lively, richly decorated pair.

Each candlestick stands on a triangular base with scroll feet, covered in acanthus leaves in relief. A domed collar leads to a tapering stem with finely textured panels, topped and tailed with fan-shaped palmettes. At the top, an urn-shaped candle cup with a band of scrolls sits under a wide, flat drip pan. A three-sided base with scroll feet stands steady on almost any surface, which is why it was a favourite form for candlesticks and candelabra from the Baroque onward.

The pair is in very good vintage condition, with light wear. They go on as a pair, just as they have stood together until now. At each end of a mantelpiece, on a festive dinner table or as a centrepiece with tall tapers, they bring sparkle and a note of old-world grandeur.
