Pair of Belgian Vintage Chrome and Gilt Wall Sconces, Massives, Neoclassical Column — Belgium, circa 1970

The Belgian lighting houses of the 1960s and 1970s produced some of the most considered neoclassical-inspired fittings of the mid-century period. Working in chrome, brass, and gilt metal, they translated the column lamp — a form with roots in the Empire period — into the language of the postwar interior: cleaner proportions, harder finishes, the same vocabulary but sharpened for rooms that wanted authority without heaviness. Pieces in this manner passed through the rooms of the best Parisian interior designers of the period, and the quality of their construction — solid fittings, precision-machined columns, original labels intact — is the evidence that separates them from decorative reproductions.

This pair is Belgian, circa 1970, by Massives, reference 5601/81, each sconce built around a circular chrome backplate from which two arms extend horizontally, each arm carrying a fluted column socket in alternating chrome and gilt — the column form that places this firmly in the neoclassical tradition, updated here with the two-metal combination that defines the period's best decorative lighting. The fluting on each column socket runs vertically and cleanly, bounded at the top and base by gilt collars; the arms themselves are straight chrome rods, the geometry of the 1970s applied to a classic structure. The original Massives label is present on the reverse of both backplates, confirming the maker, the article reference, and the Belgian origin. In the manner of Maison Charles, Bagues, and Jansen — the Paris houses whose aesthetic these pieces share.
