Pair of Brass-Tone Carriage Lanterns, Square Glass Boxes with Hinged Doors and Long Shafts, 48 cm

Before headlights, a horse-drawn carriage travelling at night carried a lantern on each side, so other drivers could see it coming down a dark road. This pair was made for that job.

Each lantern has a square box with a glass front set in a deep, stepped brass-toned frame. On top is a round, vented cap with a small finial, and below is a long cylindrical tube. That tube held the candle. Carriage lanterns usually had a spring inside the tube that pushed the candle up as it burned down, so the flame stayed level with the glass the whole night.

The pair is in very good antique condition, with one mounting bracket missing. They have stayed together for well over a century and are ready to hang again. Mount them either side of a front door, in a hallway, or in a tack room or barn.
