Pair of Column Table Lamps in Gold-Tone Metal with Fringed Shades

Tall, slender column lamps were a favored form for dressing tables and boudoirs — a narrow fluted shaft gave height without bulk, so a pair could flank a mirror or sit either side of a bed without crowding the surface below. A cream shade finished with trim and fringe was the natural pairing, softening the vertical line of the metal column and adding warmth to the light itself.

Each lamp here rises on a stepped, polygonal foot through a slender fluted column to a darker-toned accent band and knop below the fitting, in a gold-tone metal throughout. Paired with a cream shade trimmed in floral appliqué and finished with a tasseled fringe at the hem. The fringe along a shade's lower edge does more than decorate the silhouette — hung loose rather than sewn flat, it catches and softens the light spilling out from underneath, which is part of why fringed shades were so closely associated with boudoir and dressing-room lighting specifically.

Minor defects are noted to the shades, and wear and patina consistent with the metal base should be expected; the photographs form part of the condition description. Both lamps have clearly been well kept, and now move forward together to a new setting. Suited to a dressing table, a bedside pairing, or either side of a mirror.
