Pair of French Art Deco Brass Wall Sconces, Diamond Backplate Two-Arm — France, circa 1930

The Art Deco period brought geometry to the wall sconce with a confidence that no previous style had quite managed. Where the Louis XV manner had dissolved structure into organic curves and the Louis XVI had reached for classical columns, the Deco designers of the 1920s and 1930s embraced the straight line, the diamond, the chevron — ornament drawn from the machine age and the cubist canvas rather than from the garden or from Rome. The result was a sconce that declared its moment without apology, and that has aged well precisely because it never pretended to be anything other than what it was.

This pair is French, circa 1930, in polished brass, and the design is pared to its essentials. Each sconce is built around a pointed shield-form backplate — its face engraved with a diamond lattice pattern in two registers, the lower section more tightly worked than the upper, the contrast giving the backplate its visual weight at the base. Two gently curved arms sweep outward from the shoulders of the backplate, each rising to a wide flat disc bobèche and socket — the generous disc form that the Art Deco lamp designers favoured over the lobed bobèche of earlier styles, because it reads cleanly from across a room. Note how the arms are plain and unornamented, relying entirely on their curve and their proportion to carry the design — the restraint of a designer who understood that ornament on the backplate and ornament on the arms compete rather than complement. The brass is polished and even across both sconces.
