Pair of French Art Deco Wall Sconces, Signed Ezan Frosted Glass Leaf Shades and Brass — France, circa 1930

Edmond Etienne Ezan was one of the most distinctive glass artists working in France in the Art Deco period. Operating from his atelier in the 1920s and 1930s, Ezan developed a signature pressed and moulded glass — dense, frosted, with a granular surface texture that diffuses light evenly and gives each piece the quality of carved stone rather than blown glass. His work appeared in the lighting of the period's best interiors, and signed Ezan pieces are now actively collected on both sides of the Atlantic.

This pair is French, circa 1930, signed Ezan, each sconce composed of a frosted glass shade in the form of a pointed leaf or petal — the surface moulded with Ezan's characteristic granular texture, a central spine of green glass running the full length of the interior face, the two materials fused in the mould rather than painted or applied. The brass fitting holds the shade at the shoulder with a small ball-ended pin, the socket rising above on a brass arm from a circular brass backplate — the minimal hardware of a designer who understood that the glass was the piece and the fitting merely its support. Note how the green spine of each shade narrows to a point at the base and broadens slightly toward the crown, following the logic of a leaf's central vein — the botanical accuracy that makes Ezan's naturalist pieces feel observed rather than designed. Switched on, the frosted glass will glow with an even, diffused warmth, the green spine reading as a shadow at the centre of the light.

Whoever lived with these before you understood what they had. The glass on the left shade is bright and unmarked, its green spine as clean as the day it left the mould; the right matches it closely, the frosted surface carrying only the faintest trace of age at the brass pin mount — the kind of detail that confirms a genuine period piece rather than a later reproduction.
