The swan-neck wall lamp — a single gooseneck arm curving upward from a base to hold a shade — is one of the most enduring forms in French domestic lighting. Developed in the Art Nouveau period, when the curve was the period's defining gesture, it solved the wall lamp's fundamental problem with characteristic elegance: how to extend a light source away from the wall and into the room without the weight and complexity of a multi-arm fitting. A single brass arm, well proportioned and cleanly curved, proved answer enough — and the tulip glass shade that sat at its tip became one of the most recognised silhouettes in French interior lighting.

This pair is French, early twentieth century, each sconce built around a scrolled brass gooseneck arm rising from a circular fluted brass base, the arm curving upward and outward before turning to hold the frosted glass tulip shade. The bases are chased with a radiating gadroon pattern — individual lobes running from the centre to the edge, the decoration that gives the foot its visual weight and prevents the slender arm from reading as top-heavy. The frosted glass shades are the ruffled tulip form — the rim folded and waved in the manner of a flower's petals opening, the glass moulded with a fine overall texture that diffuses the light evenly and glows warmly when lit. Each sconce carries a pull-switch on the arm — the period detail that makes these as practical today as the day they were installed. The wiring is new throughout, compatible with both European 230V and North American 120V supply.

The brass is warm and sound across both sconces; the frosted glass shades are matched and intact. These arrived at today in good working order, fully restored and ready to hang.
