Pair of French Gilt Bronze Mirror Wall Sconces, Louis XV Rocaille Style — France, Early 20th Century

The mirror sconce belongs to one of the most intelligent traditions in French lighting design. Placing a mirror behind the candle arms was never purely decorative — it doubled the light in rooms that had little of it, throwing the flame back into the space and, in the process, turning a practical fitting into something that held the wall in daylight just as effectively as at night. The Louis XV period developed this form with particular confidence, surrounding the mirror with the scrolling, asymmetric ornament of the rocaille — shell, acanthus, C-scroll — in compositions that seemed to grow rather than be designed.

This pair is French, early twentieth century, cast in gilt bronze in the Louis XV rocaille manner, each sconce built around an oval mirror plate enclosed within a frame of scrolling acanthus and shell ornament, surmounted by a cartouche of rocaille foliage at the crown. From the base of the mirror frame, two scroll arms sweep outward and upward, each ending in a bobèche and socket — the arms growing from the ornament of the frame itself rather than attaching to it, the compositional logic of the rocaille at its best. The gilt is warm and even across both sconces; both frames carry the same weight and depth of ornament, well matched across the pair. Note how the oval mirror sits slightly recessed within the frame — the depth that allows the ornament to cast its own shadow around the glass, giving the piece its three-dimensional quality on the wall.
