Pair of French Gilt Bronze Two-Arm Wall Sconces, Louis XV Rocaille Style — France, Early 20th Century

The Louis XV rocaille sconce was the French interior's most organic lighting form. Where the Louis XVI style reached for architectural discipline — the column, the quiver, the urn — the Louis XV manner dissolved structure into nature: acanthus leaves that curl and unfurl, shells that open at the base, arms that grow from the body like branches from a trunk rather than attaching to it mechanically. The best foundries of the period and of the early twentieth century, when this style remained continuously in production, understood that the rocaille had to be cast from a sculptor's model to work — a simplified version always reads as exactly that.

This pair is French, early twentieth century, cast in gilt bronze with the depth of ornament that marks a serious casting. Each sconce is built around a central body — a fluted baluster rising from an acanthus base to a shell-and-scroll junction, topped with a flaming basket finial — from which two asymmetric scroll arms sweep outward, each chased with a continuous acanthus trail along its upper face and terminating in a lobed bobèche and socket. At the arm junctions, cast acanthus leaves spread outward in both directions, tying the arms to the body and giving the whole composition its botanical logic. Note how the finial basket at the crown is worked with individual acanthus leaves opening outward — the same leaf form repeated at the crown, the arm junctions, and the base, the discipline of a designer who treated the motif as a theme throughout the piece rather than a decoration applied at intervals. The gilt bronze is warm and even across both sconces.
