Pair of French Gilt Bronze Wall Sconces, Crystal Drops and Flower Pendants — France, Early 20th Century

The crystal-hung wall sconce was the French interior's way of bringing chandelier light to the wall. Where the chandelier distributed its drops across a ceiling fitting, the sconce concentrated them — pendants hanging from the arms, flower rosettes at the junctions, a crystal ball at the base — each piece catching and scattering the light differently, so that a pair of sconces either side of a mirror or a fireplace did something to a room that plain fittings simply could not. The effect was particularly valued in smaller rooms where a chandelier was not possible but where the quality of light still mattered.

This pair is French, early twentieth century, in gilt bronze with crystal drops and pendants. Each sconce is built around an openwork body from which two gooseneck arms rise and curve outward, each ending in a fluted socket cup and bobèche. From the body and arms, crystal elements are suspended at intervals: rosette flower drops at the arm junctions, faceted pendant drops along the arms, and a clear crystal ball hanging from the base of each sconce — the composition that gives the piece its movement and its light-catching quality. Several of the drops carry a faint amethyst tint — the coloured crystal that the French chandelier makers introduced selectively to add warmth to an otherwise clear composition. The gilt bronze is present and warm across both sconces.

The crystal drops are sound across both sconces with only a few rare small chips as noted, consistent with age and handling across a century. The gilt bronze is present and well matched. They arrive fully rewired and ready to use.
