Pair of French Gilt Bronze Wall Sconces, Louis XV Style — France, Vintage

Wall sconces existed long before electricity, holding candles close to a reflective backplate so a single flame could light twice the room. In French interiors of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, pairs like this one were mounted either side of a mirror or mantel, their gilt bronze surfaces doubling the candlelight against dark evening walls. Two-branch models were common in smaller rooms and hallways, offering enough light to move through a house without the expense of a chandelier. A pair of sconces on a wall does what a single lamp on a table cannot: it frames a space.

This pair is French, cast in gilt bronze in the Louis XV taste, each backplate formed as a cross of acanthus leaves and scrolling foliage, with two candle arms extending from a central rosette boss. Each arm terminates in a chased bobèche and drip-pan beneath a faux wax candle sleeve, now fitted with a small screw-base bulb in place of a taper. The foliate scrollwork is crisply modelled, with individual leaf veins still legible under the gilding — a good indicator of quality casting, since later reproductions tend to blur this detail. The two pieces match in design and proportion, cast from the same model.

The left sconce presents cleanly, its gilding even and no wiring visible at the back; the second shows a short trailing wire at its mounting boss and one clear bulb where the others are frosted, both easily corrected before hanging. Whoever hung these before you clearly favoured wall light over table lamps. They are ready for their next hallway or fireplace wall.
