Pair of French Gilt Bronze Wall Sconces Rocaille Style — France, Vintage

Before electricity, a single-arm wall sconce did modest, practical work: it held one candle at a useful height, close enough to a wall to throw light across a hallway or stair without the cost of a larger fitting. French houses of the nineteenth century used them in pairs by necessity, flanking a doorway or mirror so the light fell evenly from both sides. The scrolling arm and leaf-carved base seen on pieces like this one were standard vocabulary for the period, drawn from the rocaille repertoire that shaped so much French decorative bronze. A single sconce is a fitting; a pair is a frame for the wall it hangs on.

This pair is French, gilt bronze (or gilt brass — see note below), each sconce built as an urn-form socket body rising into a fluted, shell-edged bobèche, with a single C-scroll arm terminating in a small acanthus-leaf finial. A decorative scrolled hook is mounted to the reverse of each urn body, likely a later addition or a fitting point rather than an original candle branch. The fluting on the bobèche is crisp and evenly spaced — a useful check when comparing later reproductions, which tend to flatten this detail into a single stamped ring. Each socket sleeve currently takes a small screw-base bulb rather than a taper. The two sconces match precisely in scale and casting, made from the same model.

Both sconces present in matching condition, with an even, mellow patina across the bronze and no losses to the leaf or scroll detail on either piece. Whoever mounted these before you kept them as a pair through at least one rewiring. They are ready for a stairwell or either side of a hall mirror.
