Pair of French Gilt Bronze Wall Sconces, Crystal Drops and Shell Backplate — France, Early 20th Century

The crystal-hung wall sconce brought chandelier light to the wall — each pendant catching and scattering the light differently, so that a pair either side of a mirror or fireplace did something to a room that plain fittings simply could not. The French makers who produced these pieces in the early twentieth century understood that the crystal was not decoration added to the sconce but its point — the brass arms merely the structure from which the light-catching elements were suspended.

This pair is French, early twentieth century, each sconce built around an oval shell-form backplate in gilt bronze, its surface radiating outward in a sunburst of cast ribs — the centrepiece from which two scroll arms sweep upward and outward, each ending in a turned socket and bobèche. From the arms and backplate, faceted crystal drops hang at intervals — pendants of varying form, catching the light at different angles and creating the characteristic shimmer of the crystal sconce in a lit room. The gilt bronze is warm and present across both sconces, the patina the even, slightly darkened tone that comes from a century of indoor life.

The gilt bronze is sound across the pair and both sconces are well matched; four crystal drops are currently missing and can be replaced to restore full symmetry on request before dispatch — noted and available as an option. They arrive fully rewired and ready to use.
