Pair of French Gilt Putti Table Lamps, Winged Cherub Figures on White Marble Bases — France, Early 20th Century
The putto — the winged child who arrived in European art with the Renaissance and never quite left — found his most comfortable home in the French decorative tradition. From the bronziers of the Louis XV period onward, the laughing, dancing cherub became the figure most trusted to carry a room's lightness: placed on a mantelpiece, cast onto a clock, or, by the late nineteenth century, electrified and turned into a lamp. The conceit is exact — a figure who seems to hold the light aloft, one arm raised, as if offering it to the room.
This pair is French, early twentieth century, each figure cast in gilt régule as a standing winged putto, one arm raised to grasp the adjustable lamp rod, the other extended for balance, the body caught mid-step with a ribbon of drapery caught at the waist. The butterfly wings — spread and feather-chased — sit high on the shoulders; the face is modelled with the open, laughing expression the French foundries gave this subject for two centuries. Each figure stands on a circular white marble base banded with a gilt bronze foliate gallery — note how the gallery's leaf ornament echoes the wing chasing above it, the repetition of a single motif across the full height of the piece that gives it its vertical coherence. The lamp rod is adjustable in height, allowing the shade position to be set to the room.
Whoever kept these lamps before you maintained both figures in good general order. The gilt is warm and even; the marble bases are sound; the electrics are in full working order. They arrive fully rewired and ready to use, plug adapted to your country at no charge — a pair that sits naturally on a console, a sideboard, or at either end of a mantelpiece.
They arrive professionally packed and fully insured. All duties and import charges are our responsibility — you pay nothing beyond the listed price. Returns are accepted within 30 days.
