Pair of French Mid-Century Wall Sconces, Brass and Dark Lacquered Spindle, Two-Arm — France, circa 1950-1960

The mid-century French lighting trade favoured a particular kind of restraint — a tapered spindle form, dark and matte against warm brass fittings, the two materials doing all the decorative work that carved ornament would have done in an earlier period. This combination let a sconce read as sculptural on its own terms rather than borrowing the vocabulary of an earlier century, and it has aged into a look now closely associated with the confident, considered interiors of the 1950s and 1960s.

This pair is French, circa 1950-1960, each sconce built around a tapering dark lacquered spindle body, narrow at the top and broadening toward the base, mounted centrally on the wall with a brass collar. Two curved brass arms extend from this collar, each ending in a scalloped brass drip pan and a matching dark tapered candle-form cover — note how the taper of the candle covers echoes the taper of the central spindle above, a single visual idea repeated at two scales that ties the whole composition together. The brass fittings show a deliberate surface treatment distinct from a plain polish, giving the metal a slightly muted, warm tone against the dark spindle body.

The brass and spindle bodies are sound across both sconces, the finish consistent and well matched. They have been fitted with new wiring and are ready to use.
