Pair of French Neoclassical Style Patinated Metal Two-Light Wall Sconces Mid 20th Century

The Louis XVI quiver sconce was the period's most precisely resolved wall-lighting form. The tapered backplate — drawn from the archer's quiver of classical mythology — gave the composition its vertical authority, while the swag ornament and pine-cone pendant softened it just enough for the drawing room. The best foundries of the late eighteenth and early twentieth centuries cast these pieces in solid bronze, understanding that the weight of the metal was part of what made the form convincing: a quiver, after all, was a heavy object, and the lamp that quoted it needed to carry that weight in the hand and on the wall.

This pair is French, early twentieth century, cast in solid gilt bronze in the Louis XVI manner. Each sconce is built around a fluted tapered backplate chased with vertical reeding and a central swag of drapery, terminating at the base in a pine-cone pendant and acanthus foot. At the crown, a square cartouche — chased and slightly raised — provides the visual stop at the top of the backplate before the arms branch from it. Two scroll arms sweep outward from the body, each chased along its length and terminating in a beaded bobèche and socket. Note how the arms are not simple curves but taper as they extend — wider at the body junction, narrower at the tip — the structural logic of a branch under load, and the detail that distinguishes a well-designed casting from a simplified one. The gilt bronze is warm and even across both sconces.
