Pair of French Patinated Brass Two-Arm Wall Sconces, with White Fabric Shades — France, circa 1950

The double-arm brass wall sconce was the mid-century French interior's most reliable lighting solution — practical enough for a bedroom or a hallway, considered enough for a dining room or a salon. The best examples of the 1950s were cast in solid brass and allowed to develop a natural patina over decades of use, the warm darkening of the metal that polished brass never achieves and that gives a room its sense of having been lived in rather than assembled.

This pair is French, circa 1950, in solid patinated brass, each sconce built around a circular backplate from which two scroll arms sweep outward and upward, each ending in a turned candle-column socket. The arms carry a foliate mount at the backplate junction — a cast leaf detail that provides the visual anchor from which the arms appear to grow — and the patina across both sconces has the warm, uneven tone that solid brass develops over time, darker in the recesses of the casting and lighter on the high points of the arms. The white fabric shades are included and fitted, giving the pair a soft, diffused light when in use. Note how the sconces face each other as true mirror images — one arm sweeping left and right on each — the paired composition that makes a matched set read as a single considered installation on the wall.
