Pair of French Silver-Plated Empire Style Candlesticks, Palmette and Fluted Column — France, Early 20th Century

The Empire candlestick resolved a problem that every preceding style had approached differently: how to make an object used at the dining table every evening feel worthy of a room designed to impress. The answer the Empire bronziers settled on was architectural — the candlestick as a miniature column, with a proper base, a proper shaft, and a proper capital, all dressed in the ornament borrowed from ancient Rome that Napoleon had made the language of the age. The result was an object that looked as considered at ten in the morning, unlit on a sideboard, as it did at ten in the evening with a flame above it.

This pair is French, early twentieth century, in silver-plated metal, each candlestick built as a tapered fluted column rising from a circular base bordered with a chased palmette-and-dart frieze — the same motif repeated at the collar below the nozzle cup, tying the top and base together across the full height of the piece. The fluting on the column shaft is cleanly executed, the ridges running straight from base collar to upper collar without interruption, and the silver plate is bright and even across both pieces. The nozzle cups are removable for candle fitting. Note how the base sits on a raised inner disc within the palmette border — a small detail, but one that gives the candlestick its stability and its sense of being properly finished rather than simply cast and plated.
