Pair of French Vintage Brass Wall Sconces, Teal Green Glass Flower Shades — France, Mid-20th Century

The flower-form glass shade was one of the more poetic inventions of the French decorative lighting tradition. Where the Empire period had reached for geometry and the Art Deco for abstraction, the naturalist strand that ran through French design from the Art Nouveau onward kept returning to the plant: the petal, the leaf, the open bloom held upward to receive the light. At its best, this tradition produced pieces where the shade was not an accessory to the lamp but its reason — the light source existing only to illuminate the glass from within and reveal its colour.

This pair is French, mid-twentieth century, each sconce built around a brass stem chased with an acanthus leaf collar, rising from a circular brass base to a wide fan-form shade in teal green glass — the petals moulded individually and fanning outward in a full bloom, the glass thick enough to hold its colour in daylight and translucent enough to glow when lit. The teal is the particular blue-green that French glassmakers produced in the mid-century for exactly this application: warm enough to read as green in one light, cool enough to shift toward aqua in another. Note how the petals are not flat but gently curved — each one slightly dished, so the shade has depth as well as spread, the three-dimensional quality that separates a pressed glass shade from a moulded one. The brass bases and stems are polished and sound across both pieces. The source notes one shade is marginally larger than the other — a minor variation that confirms these are period pieces rather than a modern matched set.
