Pair of Gilt Brass Wall Lamps, Conical Ribbed Glass Shades, French Design

Mid-century wall lamps increasingly moved away from the traditional candle-arm silhouette toward a simpler, more architectural idea: a single triangular bracket rising from the wall to hold one shade, the shade itself doing most of the visual work. Ribbed or fluted glass was a common choice for these shades, since the texture caught and diffused light more softly than plain glass while still keeping the fitting compact and unobtrusive on the wall.

This pair is built around an angular gilt brass bracket, each rising from a narrow backplate to a raised point that supports a conical shade above. The shades are worked in white ribbed glass, their surface fluted in fine vertical lines from a narrower neck down to a wider rim, giving each shade a soft, lantern-like glow when lit. Note how the bracket's triangular profile is left largely unornamented, letting the glass shade's texture carry the visual interest, a restrained, architectural approach typical of French mid-century wall lighting design.

The pair is described by its source as showing signs of wear to the glass shades, consistent with genuine age and use. As lighting pieces, both sconces will still pass through our own workshop for a full rewire and safety check before dispatch, delivered working and ready to use, fitted with a B22 bayonet socket as supplied. Hung as a pair either side of a mirror, bed, or doorway, their compact depth suits a narrower wall than a candle-arm sconce would need.
