Pair of Gilt Brass Wall Sconces, Sunburst Mounts with Patterned Glass Shades, 1950s

Pairing a gilt starburst mount with a decorated glass shade was a favored formula in 1950s wall lighting — the sunburst backplate doing the decorative work at the wall itself, while a patterned glass globe added texture and softened the light without needing further ornament on the frame.

Each sconce here has a black rectangular body set with a gilt brass sunburst medallion at the wall, from which a curved arm supports a bell-form glass shade decorated with a fine crosshatched grid pattern. The crosshatch pattern does more than decorate — a grid like this breaks up the light passing through the shade into smaller points rather than one even glow, giving the fixture a slightly sparkling quality when lit that a plain frosted globe wouldn't have.

Condition shows some signs of use, as is typical for a secondhand item of this kind and visible in the photographs. Both sconces have clearly been well kept, and now move forward together to a new setting. Suited to a hallway, a bedroom, or flanking a mirror.

Fitted with a small bayonet-style socket, these sconces keep a compact profile at 15 cm high and 18 cm deep from the wall.
