Pair of Gilt Metal Two-Arm Wall Sconces with Candle-Form Covers and Scrolled Arms

Two-arm sconces with candle-form covers were a mainstay of European wall lighting, the scrolled arm and modeled wax-drip cover borrowed directly from candlestick design so that early electrified fixtures could sit comfortably in rooms still furnished with genuine candlesticks and chandeliers. Pairing a shaped backplate with symmetrical scrolled arms let a single fixture read as balanced and complete on the wall, without needing a matching chandelier overhead.

This pair follows that design closely: a shaped, reeded backplate with a fluted column and acorn-form finial, from which two scrolled gilt metal arms extend, each ending in a beaded drip pan and a candle-form cover finished with a modeled wax-drip detail. The modeled drips are a deliberately old-fashioned touch — purely decorative on an electric fixture, they exist only to make the bulb cover read as a real candle burned partway down, a visual convention carried over wholesale from candlelit rooms into early electric lighting.

Condition is good. Both sconces have clearly been well kept, and now move forward together to a new setting. Suited to a dining room, a hallway, or flanking a mirror, where the paired scrolled arms read symmetrically.
