Pair of Large Blue and White Porcelain Ginger Jars, Kangxi-Style Decoration — 20th Century

The Kangxi style — named for the Chinese emperor whose reign produced some of the most sought-after blue-and-white porcelain in history — has been reproduced and reinterpreted by decorative workshops for well over two centuries. European and Asian ceramic houses alike have continued to draw on its dense floral scrollwork and cobalt palette because the style itself has never stopped being wanted: a pair of blue-and-white lidded jars remains one of the most versatile decorative objects a room can hold, equally at home on a mantelpiece, flanking a fireplace, or anchoring a console table.

This pair, twentieth century, is decorated overall in the Kangxi manner — dense stylised floral motifs and decorative friezes rendered in shades of blue, with subtle accent touches of pink and pale green worked into the larger floral medallions. Each jar rises from a stepped foot through a full rounded body to a shoulder banded with a narrow geometric frieze, the neck rising to meet a domed lid topped with a flame-form finial — the classic ginger jar silhouette that has remained essentially unchanged since its origin. Note how the two jars, while matching in form and palette, are not identical in their painted detail — the floral scrollwork on each varies slightly in placement and density, the sign of hand-painted rather than transfer-printed decoration.

Both jars are in very good general condition; one lid has a small chip beneath its rim, not visible when the lid is in place, as noted and photographed. Whoever kept this pair before you displayed them together and kept both jars and lids matched. They stand ready for a console, a mantelpiece, or either side of a doorway.
