Pair of Louis XIV Style Octagonal Candlesticks, Silver-Tone Metal, Faceted Baluster Stems and Stepped Bases

Clean, faceted and architectural, these candlesticks rely on shape rather than ornament. Every surface is a flat plane that catches the light in its own way. They are a pair with quiet authority, made for a formal table.

Each candlestick is made of silver-tone metal and built from octagonal sections. A stepped, canted octagonal base supports a faceted baluster stem with knopped collars, rising to an octagonal candle cup with a square drip pan. Octagonal faceted candlesticks were a hallmark of late seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century French silver, where the flat facets catch candlelight as a series of bright planes.

The pair is in very good vintage condition, with tarnish to the finish. Their mellow tarnish is left for the next owner to keep or brighten. Down the centre of a dining table or at each end of a mantelpiece, with tall ivory tapers, they give a room a calm, classical order.
