Pair of Louis XVI Style Two-Arm Wall Sconces, Gilt Metal with Acanthus Arms and Shield-Shaped Back Plates

Leaves curl along every arm of these sconces, and the gilding glows warm even before the lights come on. Two candle-style lights rise from each one, giving a soft glow to a wall.

Each sconce has a shield-shaped back plate in gilt metal, topped with a small finial and decorated with a hanging chain of leaves and husks, ending in a leafy drop. Two arms curve out from the middle, wrapped in acanthus leaves. Each holds a leafy drip pan, a cream candle sleeve and a candle-style bulb. The hanging chain of small bell-shaped flowers is called a husk chain. It was one of the best-loved ornaments of Louis XVI design, used on everything from furniture to clocks.

The sconces are in very good vintage condition, with bright, even gilding. They come to us in working order, and we rewire them before dispatch. Keep them well, and they'll last a long time yet. A pair works well either side of a mirror, a fireplace or a bed.

In short: a pair of two-arm wall sconces in gilt metal, with acanthus arms, shield-shaped back plates and cream candle sleeves.
