Pair of Modernist Brass and Acrylic Wall Sconces, 1960s — European

Mid-20th century wall lighting increasingly paired brass with newer materials like acrylic, moving away from cast ornament toward flat planes and geometric outlines — a square backplate and a single angled arm doing the work that scrollwork and rosettes once did, letting the fitting read as architectural rather than decorative.

Each sconce here is built from a square brass backplate set with a beveled acrylic panel, from which a single angled brass arm extends to a socket fitted with its original ribbed porcelain top. Keeping the original porcelain socket cap, rather than replacing it with a plainer modern fitting, matters more than it might first appear — porcelain was chosen specifically for its heat resistance right at the bulb, and an intact original cap is one of the clearer signs that a fitting hasn't been substantially altered since it was made.

Condition is good, consistent with the seller's own description. Both sconces have clearly been well kept, and now move forward together to a new setting. Suited to a hallway, a study, or flanking a piece of art, where their flat geometric profile reads cleanly against a wall.
