Pair of Napoleon III Style Column Candlesticks, Silver-Tone Metal, Fluted Stems with Ribbon-Tied Garlands, Gadrooned Bases

Short and sturdy, these candlesticks look like two small classical columns dressed for a celebration. Garlands hang from the top of each fluted stem, and the bases spread out in rippling gadroons. They are a compact pair with plenty of presence.

Each candlestick has a fluted column stem hung near the top with ribbon-tied garlands of leaves. It is capped by a wide candle cup with a leaf-band rim, and stands on a domed, gadrooned base edged with a decorative border. The finish is a dark silver tone with lighter highlights on the raised detail. Ribbon-tied garlands were a favourite of Louis XVI design, meant to look like real flowers hung up for a festivity, and the Napoleon III period revived them with enthusiasm.

The pair is in good vintage condition, with tarnish to the finish. We have left the dark tone of the metal as it is, and a polish would brighten them if that's the look you want. At each end of a mantelpiece or on a dinner table with tall tapers, they give a warm, classical glow.

The pair: two silver-tone metal column candlesticks with fluted stems, ribbon-tied garlands, leaf-band cups and gadrooned bases.
