Pair of Neoclassical Candlesticks, Silver-Tone Metal with Ram's Heads and Garlands, Fluted Urn Sconces, Warm Worn Finish

Rams' heads, garlands and beading crowd onto a pair of candlesticks no taller than a drinking glass. Up close, every surface has something to find, and the silver has worn to a soft glow with warm metal showing through. They are small objects with a great deal of presence.

Each candlestick has a fluted, urn-shaped candle cup trimmed with beading, set on a square, tapering pedestal. On each of the four sides of the pedestal, a ram's head is hung with a garland, and the whole stands on a stepped square base with a beaded edge. The ram's head hung with garlands comes from the altars of ancient Rome, where it recalled sacrifice. Eighteenth-century neoclassical designers revived it as pure ornament, and it became one of the signature motifs of the style.

The pair is in good vintage condition, with the silver-tone finish worn in places to show the warmer metal beneath. We have not replated them, because the worn silver is part of their character. On a mantelpiece or down the centre of a dining table with tall tapers, they give a room a classical note and a warm glow.
