Pair of Ornate Brass Lamp Bases, Rococo-Style Candlestick Form, Decorative Feet, 27 cm

Ornate cast brass candlestick forms — scrolled tripod feet, foliate cartouches, and a fluted stem — were a favorite base for electrified table lamps once gas and candle fittings gave way to electric light, since the existing decorative vocabulary of 18th-century candlestick design translated easily onto a lamp fitted with a socket instead of a wax pricket.

This is a set of two cast brass lamp bases in a rococo-style form, each with a fluted, tapering stem rising from a tripod base of scrolled feet and repoussé foliate decoration, finished at the top with a socket fitting ready to take a shade. Both are reported tested and functional with a bulb on mains power. The repoussé decoration seen here — the floral and scroll work — is worked from the reverse side of the sheet metal, hammered out into relief before the piece is cast or applied, a slower, more labor-intensive method than simply casting a flat decorative pattern, which is part of why this kind of ornate brasswork held its value long after cheaper stamped alternatives became available.

Both bases have clearly been well kept, and now move forward to a new setting as a pair. Well suited to flanking a mantel, a console, or a pair of nightstands, where their matching scrollwork reads best side by side.

Standing 27 cm to the top of the base, they're a workable scale for a standard lamp shade without overwhelming a side table.
