Pair of Painted Tole and Wrought Metal Wall Sconces, Floral and Foliate Two-Light Design

Painted tole work — sheet metal shaped and hand-finished to imitate flowers, leaves, and foliage — became a favored technique for wall sconces across mid-twentieth-century Europe, prized for how convincingly it could carry color and form without the weight or cost of cast bronze. A pair of sconces gave a room symmetry on either side of a mirror, doorway, or mantel, while the tole flowers did the work that a plain candle arm never could: turning a simple light fitting into something closer to a fixed bouquet.

This pair is built around a black wrought metal double-arm frame, each arm curving outward to a scalloped drip pan and candle socket. Rising from the center of each sconce is a cluster of hand-painted tole leaves and lily-form flowers in warm orange, cream, and green tones, the petals shaped and shaded to suggest real bloom and shadow. Note how the flower cluster is built in overlapping layers rather than a single flat piece — several blooms and leaves set at different heights and angles — a construction method typical of decorative tole work meant to read fully in the round rather than only from straight on.

Each sconce currently holds a faux candle cover at its socket, giving the pair a traditional candle-style presentation. As lighting pieces, both sconces will go through our workshop to be rewired for safe electric use before dispatch, delivered working and ready to use. Hung as a pair either side of a mirror or console, small clip-on shades suit them if you would like to soften the light further.
